Alocasia x calidora

The plant illustrated above is one of the Aroidia Research selections of the cross between A. odora and A. gageana. The Alocasia x calidora being marketed today is a different selection of the same cross, having more of the characteristics of a vigorous A. odora than the much smaller A. gageana. We chose this one because it grows more compactly and inherited much more of the rounded leaf characteristic of A. gageana. It also produces abundant offsets and can grow in sun or semi-shade.

This hybridization produced a range of morphologic types, some of which bore no resemblance to either parent. See our "Pixie Teardrops" pages for examples of the more bizarre progeny we obtained.
